Transcriptions App Reviews

18 Customer Reviews:

My main issue, and the reason why I’m no longer using the app, is that it doesn’t use the keyboard’s play buttons. Instead, one has to use ctrl-1, ctrl-2, etc. This is not so easy to do while typing, as it requires two fingers. The ergonomics made me abandon using the app.

It doesn’t work at all!

Waste of time trying this app. It doesn’t work at all!

Augusto_sa v1.0 · 11 years ago

Useful!

Great for a free app. I don’t give 5 stars because there’s always something to improve.

Antonio Castagnoli v1.1 · 10 years ago

Ok, but it’s a pity that…

It would be great if you put some information about language supported by the app. I would have been happy to pay for brazilian portuguese :)

fmrcwb v1.1 · 10 years ago

Looked good but it can’t open the audio files created by my audio recorder. I’d understand except that they are MP3 files the most common audio file format.

jjstrybosch v1.0 · 11 years ago

Does not even open

Says that the application is not based on AV Kit… okay… but it crashes because it can not find it...

Dame-Plume v1.1 · 11 years ago

I was anxious about downloading a free app to aid in my transcription process for my research. Turns out I could not even open the app. I will be investing in something a little more reliable. It is a bad start when the app never launches.

I’ve looked at and used a lot of Mac transcription software (what can I say, I’m a cheap grad student). My previous tool is now a little expensive for what you get. Transcriptions is an excellent replacement, and it’s what I’ll be recommending from here on out. It does what you need — timecodes, speed control, text substitutions — with very little interface bloat. Yay! My one request is for a frame capture function so I can grab stills of important moments.

Does the job!

This is perfect for my needs. Nothing fancy, but has just the features I need to easily transcribe video. (Short of doing it for me!)

Luhmann · 11 years ago

It is a great little app.

This is a very important little app for the qualitative researcher. Very much needed and as a graduate student, I’m glad it’s free. :-).

This does almost all you need for transcription, but one thing it is lacking is the ability to speed up playback. This lets you more quickly move through slow sections of a recording. The application does let you slow down playback, so it should be a simple change to also speed up playback. It would be even better to add controls to toggle slow/fast playback. I currently use an old version of Quicktime just for the ability to speed up playback, but it lacks Transcriptions’ ability to skip back a set number of seconds with a keyboard control.

As an IT Project Manager, I do a lot of meetings. I needed a simply way to play back my recorded meetings and transcribe the pertinent information. I did not need a bunch of fancy bells and whistles. This program is exactly what I needed. It offers me the simple tools I need to transcribe. I like the adjustable loopback feature where I can program a function to loop back a segment of audio/video (From 1 to 10 seconds). It time stamps each segment, allowing me the chance to go back and look at it over again at another time; or, I can manually time stamp anuy spot in the transcription. Saving in RTF is perfect. I can import into MS Word or Apple Pages if I desire.

Mr. Luis Lopez · 11 years ago

It’s not only the only software for this in OS X, it’s also really good. I can only assume the lack of deeper interest/praise is due to people not knowing it exists.

I have hours of interviews to transcribe for a book I’m writing. I wanted to be able to do transcription without having to manage both my digital recorder and a laptop. This app works very well; I especially like that it enters a time stamp every time you hit Enter while you’re typing, so it’s easy to go back and find a relevant place in the recording later on. You can save transcriptions as rtf files directly from the app; I’d prefer Word files but maybe that’s not possible. What would make this a five-star app: The ability to speed up playback as well as slow it down; sometimes you just want to skip past stuff.

This is a great app. Free is always better than the $25 charged by competitors, but I liked it so much, I send them a donation straight away. Well done, David Haselberger.

Grant27 · 10 years ago

Great app and as a professional transcriber I’m picky. Only thing keeping it from a 5 star rating is the lack of a fast forward option and rewind option (different from recue), and ability to assign Function keys to program shortcuts. I like to try and keep my shotcuts the same across platforms. Other than that it’s perfect for what I need it for on my Mac which is quick files. Would love to see it come to iOS if it’s not already there.

Okami1981 · 10 years ago

Went ok for a couple of short jobs, but now timestamps are off and keeps shutting down. Cursor freezes and won’t click where I want it. Not having trouble in other programs with that - just this one. My file I am transcribing is about 300 M. Should not be a problem like this. I wish I could get a refund.

Very helpful so far.....

Just started using this and it is so much help becasue it will backspace on resuming the audio so there are no missed words. I had already started a document in Pages so I'm not sure how it would work to export if typing the document in this App but will try that too. Really does help move the transcribing along and nice to be able to select my own control keys though it would be nice to have single key controls as mentioned in another comment.

Total waste

Stop. Right there and run away from this app. It doesn't do what it promises and getting help is impossible. I'm eating my $3 and going elsewhere after a half hour of trying to figure out who an app calkled "Transcriptions" actually transcribes anything. It doesn't. Support? Forget about it. You get sent to a confusing website and a place to leave an email with a warning it might be awhile before anybody gets back to you. Good lord. Does Apple screen out scams at all?

Transcription—For Secretaries?

Please, please, read the description carefully before you buy! (I didn’t.) This app will NOT convert voice to text. It will help a good typist MANUALLY transcribe an audio file, Unfortunately, that is not what I was looking for.

Great for transcribing qualitative data and using with QDA software

Fantastic, simple, and effective app for transcribing!

leakygrammar · 7 years ago

Very helpful, 2 suggestions/requests

This app works as advertised. The time stamps are very helpful. I would only have two suggestions. The first would be an easy way to remove or hide all of the timestamps at once - particularly when exporting. Also, I wish there were more options for exporting such as to a doc or pdf. (If there is already a way to do either of these things and I am just not seeing it, please let me know and I will amend my review.) Other than that, having the media file right next to the text screen does make the tedious task of transcription easier.

transcribing oral history

I’m using the program ( 2 hours now) to transcribe a a family history for a neighbor. There was help to get me started, not a lot, but enough to get the keystrokes down. Maybe they should let us ludites know you have to combine control, option, command or shift with a letter or symbol. It’s great. The money i’m going to save in felt tips, legal pads yadda yada. instead of a ton of notes on different pages i’ve got an organized file on my desktop four stars only because i’m new to the review thing

col. duck · 8 years ago

Does not transcribe

I honestly thought this program would actually transcribe the Mp3 file for you. If you want to type it yourself there are numerous free options.

Poet62 · 8 years ago

A little disappointing

With a 101+ key Apple keyboard with 19 function keys, and a tab key I won't be using when I am transcribing, I still have to use 2-key combos in order to set the shortcuts in this application. I'm not sure what's wrong with F1-F19? And why won't the application accept Tab? Very strange. I'd rather not have to contort my hands when I'm working, or have difficult-to-reach combos to control the action. Silly. If it doesn't take mouse inputs it should too. I'm just doing corrections, and may very well have a hand on the mouse, and if I had a mouse with auxillary buttons I could use them to start/stop the playback, etc. However, that frustration aside, it's a good app at a good price.

???????????

There is absolutely no instruction, very few support files, & nothng online to instruct how to do this - nor is there an email or any contact! I have been tearing my hair out trying to get this thing to transcribe the past 2 hours, which I would have done manually by now, so I guess after paying for a program that has no instruction how to use it, I will have to. If someone can tell me how to get this app to transcribe the file after uploading it, I will gratefully remove/update this review! All I see is “check box in preferences pane,” which is not labeled anywhere, nor is its location delineated in the support page so… So far, a frustrating waste of time & resources.

Foot pedal support

I’d love to find a compatible foot pedal sold here in the states. Developer recommends one sold in Germany which is WAY too expensive.

Incredibly useful

Really great! This app has saved my butt on numerous projects, mainly transcribing interviews for documentary videos. Two feature requests: 1. I would like to be able to increase playback speed beyond 100% in addition to slowing it down. 2. I would like to be able to jump forward in xx number of seconds while playing back the same way that you can jump back. Just like slowing down the speed and replay, these two shortcut assignable functions should also be tweakable in the control panel. Thanks!

So far so good...

I was looking for some software I could use for transcriptions on a MAC. Most software was $40+ and I wasn’t willing to spend that to try it out. This was inexpensive, so I hoped it would fit the bill. So far, so good. The hotkeys work for play/pause and replay the audio. I wish it would work while I was typing in a word processor rather than on it’s screen, but I can copy and paste out of the file so it will work. The substitutions for labels like s1 turning into Speaker 1: is a bit more complicated. You need to have your replacements in the Text section of the System Preferences. The, once you finish typing, you choose Edit, Substitutions, Show Substitutions. That brings up another dialogue box where you can “Replace All”. Wish it would do it as I type, but again, it works and will save me time. For the price, it works for what I need.

NO MP4 support

Tried to use this with an imovie and it is not supported. I don’t know why this is available on an mac if mp4 is not supported. useless to me.

TP67** · 9 years ago

Unique and Necessary

Very glad to see it’s still actively developed. This makes a painful task a pleasure, and even though it has no real competitors, the developer is keeping the price reasonable. I don’t understand why everyone doesn’t keep a copy on their system. It’s essential!

Chowhoundus Selloutus · 9 years ago

This looks like a very good app, but

unfortunately I assumed that it would automatically transcribe an m4a audio. The Developer responded very quickly that it could not do that (I appreciated that). Much more unfortunate is the fact that it is apparently no longer possible to get a refund from Apple in this situation without calling their billing department (and I have no idea whether they would do so, becasue I did not want to spend another 15 minutes waiting for someone to answer).

Nessustoo · 9 years ago

Saved me $40-$99

If you’re like me and don't want to spend $40-$99 on a transcriber that doesn’t deliver then buy this transcriber for the price of a soft drink.
